Waikato River Bridge

The project presented an opportunity to collaborate with BBO on the design for the new bridge over the Waikato River to the new Peacocke's development.  The sculptural form of the support structure makes a subtle reference to the traditional Maori kete bag used for the transport of locally grown produce once traded along the river.  It also acknowledges the weaving of cultures; both the historic coming together on the beach for trade, and the current cultural diversity that is enjoyed in Kirikiriroa.

Context PA

The extension of the balustrade verticals down beyond the bridge deck obscures the main bridge structure and provides an opportunity to manipulate the visual form of the bridge from below.  The length of this extension is adjusted along the bridge to visually fine up the centre.

footbridge

The footbridge which traverses the road at the northern abutment represents a significant territorial threshold.  The vertical posts supporting the bridge mark the place and acknowledge a hope for unity amongst all people who now share the land.
