This project presented the opportunity to significantly improve the visibility and identity of the Hamilton Zoo and Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, solidifying them as one of Kirikiriroa’s key tourist destinations. Our team collaborated with Wraight and Associates, and Designwell to create an inviting entry precinct that is complementary to the surrounding landscape. With Te Aranga principles in mind, our intent was to create a compelling sense of arrival integrated with the landscape and public infrastructure. Threads of ecology, arrival, learning and play are woven throughout the spaces, supported by the immersive and interpretive walks that each destination has to offer its visitors. Retail, hospitality, and ticketing flows were carefully planned in order to ensure a high level of visitor experience integration. In this way, an experience of approach and arrival is crafted that builds anticipation and memorability.

The Waiwhakareke Entry Precinct is an excellent example of how good design can create a unique and memorable experience for visitors.
